Description

Public speaking usually ranks as American’s number 1 fear, ahead of dying, snakes and spiders. In essence, people would rather die from a massive snake and spider attack than stand up in front of a group of people and make a presentation! Not surprising since so many of us have suffered through boring, uninspired, and irrelevant presentations made by so-called professionals who drone on and on and on.

Whether you work for a large organization or a small shop, you will likely need to present your grant project or ideas to someone during your career, whether a decision-maker within your own organization or a potential funder. Perhaps you have attended a conference like GPA and thought “I know this information. If only I could present it as confidently as that speaker did.” Or perhaps: “That’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back. I could do better than that!”

In this session, we will discover ways to make presentations interesting, exciting and the type in which people walk out and talk about how much they learned. We will discuss what information to include in your presentation, how to make it interesting and relevant to your audience, how and when to inject humor, best ways to organize your ideas, and tips to sound like a professional. We will also review ways to use and not use PowerPoint or other media to enhance your presentation.

While focused on the skills you need in a public speaking or presentation situation, the skills learned here will also apply to individual conversations and group meetings. Learn how to convey ideas competently and confidently to 1 person or a room of thousands.
