Census Bureau data is foundational in writing successful grant applications, but users can often feel overwhelmed when searching for the data they need. With major upcoming data releases from the 2020 Census, Economic Census, and American Community Survey, it is critical that public opinion research professionals stay up-to-date on data resources available to them from the U.S. Census Bureau and the new ways of accessing these data.
 
This session will provide an overview of the invaluable, key Census Bureau data that grant writers can use and how they can use them.  The session will also feature live demonstrations of two tools to access these data, guided by examples of using demographic and business data in effective grant applications:
data.census.gov – The Census Bureau’s new data platform to access data from the American Community Survey, Economic Census, and the upcoming 2020 Census.
Census Business Builder – A suite of services that provide selected demographic and economic data from the Census Bureau in a simple to access and use format.
 
Learning objectives for the session focus on finding relevant data to craft, construct, and submit effective grant applications. At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
- Identify the Census Bureau programs which provide the best data for their grant proposals, including data from the Decennial Census, the American Community Survey, the Economic Census, and more
- Navigate new ways of accessing Census Bureau data through data.census.gov and Census Business Builder
- Explore the latest tables, maps, reports, and data visualizations from the Census Bureau in an easily digestible format
